that's a very long list.
I've been collecting/playing HeroClix since it very first came out, and along the way I've been introduced to many obscure characters that I've been meaning to find out more about. I started a list to look up if I ever was bored enough to do some reading on, and then kept adding to it...and adding to it...and adding to it. It also became clear that most of the characters that were obscure to me really weren't among the comics geeks. Now, I'll have to add to it again since another DC set has just been released with another bunch of characters I know little or nothing about.

(there are one or two I'm don't know)
I only know DC really but I'll try and give you a bit of background on the starred ones from the first chunk, more later if I remember.
Huntress - Originally the daughter of the earth 2 batman and catwoman, was killed off in Crisis On Infinite Earths and is now a daughter of a mafia family who's name eludes me. Operates in Gotham, currently as Batman's ally, but they don't always see eye to eye.
Man-Bat - (not sure if this is the original story, but this is the one I know) A scientist who is practically deaf tries to use bat dna to cure himself, ends up as a big giant bat. Villan. Pretty similar to the story of 'The Fly' thinking about it.
Mad Hatter - Jarvis Tetch, guy whos uses hats with micro chips in to make people do stuff he wants. Was in love with a girl called Alice and had an obsession with alice in wonderland.
T.O.Morrow - Garden variety mad scietist. Creator of the Red Tornado, an android used to infiltrate both the JSA and the JLA who ended up as a good guy, and the Amazo robot, a robot who has the powers of every member of the JLA.
Blue Beetle - Golden Age superhero, originally published by Charlton, bought by DC when they folded. Member of the lesser known JLA line up, featuring Booster Gold, Fire and Ice, Guy Gardner, etc. Close friends with Booster.
Booster Gold - Guy from the future, kicked out of college for cheating in american football games, stole a bunch of crap that made him super and travelled back to our time to become a superhero.
Nightwing - The grown up Dick Grayson aka. The first robin. Founder of the Teen Titans.
Changeling - Dunno much about this guy really, member of the teen titans, green skin, can take the form of any animal. Sometimes goes by the name Beast Boy.
Gorilla Grodd - Flash Villan. Lives in Gorrila City where a meteor crashed givnig a group of Gorillas telepathy and super intelligence. Currently in prisoned in Gorilla City.
Solomon Grundy - Cyrus Gold, 19th century business man died in a swamp, and his life force, melded with local plant life, created the creature known as Solomon Grundy. Every time he gets killed he comes back with a different personality. For a short while was reborn with a gentle mind and was friends with Jack Knight aka Star Man.
Black Manta ? Black Aquaman villan. Because they were oppresed for so long on the surface, blacks decided to fight for control underwater. Killed aquaman's son, who?s name also eludes me.
Weather Wizard ? Flash villan who used his dead brothers invention (a wand that controls weather, hence the name) to become a career criminal. As usual, due to a number of defeats, he has a grudge against a certain speedster. Recently reformed due to some cockamamie story where he gets sent to hell or some such.
Clayface III ? Preston Payne, born with a skin disease that made his face look like clay. Tried to fix himself by injecting himself with clayface 2?s dna. This gave him terrible pains which only go away when he touches other humans, however this causes them to melt. Bit of a sob story really.
Hawk & Dove ? Don?t know the origins on this one. Used to be 2 brothers from DC, one (hawk) representing chaos, and the other (dove) representing order, balancing each other out. Dove gets killed during the Crisis, hawk goes mental (coz of the lack of balance) so a new female dove is brought in. There?s a story line in JSA where Hawk becomes a villain but I can?t really remember it right now.
Brainiac 13 - 13th upgrade of Braniac, member of the Legion of Super Heros
Desaad - Darkseid's lackey.
The Key - old jla villan. Returned recently and incapacitated the Jla resulting in the new Green Arrow's induction into the JLA.
Carter Hall ? Hawkman
Kirk Langstrom - I think Mandbat.
Eddie Nashton - ?
Selina Kyle ? Catwoman
Jervis Tetch - Mad Hatter
Ted Kord - Blue Beetle
Michael Jon Carter - Booster Gold

Checkmate - Government agency who use a group of superhumans to stop threats from other armies terrorists, etc. In charge of the suicide squad and Captain Atom.
Intergang - The Mafia of metropolis. Run by either 'Boss' Moxie or Morgan Edge (Clark Kent's boss when he was a news anchorman) depending when you're reading. Intergang also operated under both Desaad (posing as Darkseid) and Lex Luthor.
Easy Company - Army platoon from DCs War Comics. Run by Sgt. Rock with a rotating cast of others.
Parademon - Ugly little bastards who fly round keeping Apokolips' (home world of Darkseid) residents in check.
Lex Corp - Company run by lex luthor dabbling in all sorts. Only the Daily Planet at one point.

I know a lot of the names are alter egos, but it's matching up who is who that confuses me. The Limited Edition variants are most often the secret id's. Granted, I'm never going to take the time to learn who all of these characters are, but a bit of a base knowledge comes in handy against the nerds I go up against in tournaments.

It's funny to me how there's very few of the marvel characters I don't know... but I'm foggier on the DC characters.
Growing up reading so many different marvel titles, I just thought their characters were more interesting. Part of it may have been the times, but the DC characters were just so much dorkier.
Batman was the first comic I ever read (back when he was a Dark Detective) but the DC universe really didn't do anything for me until Dark Knight Returns and Kingdom Come.
With the exception of Warlord... that was one of my favorite comics, but it's somewhat outside of the traditional DC universe. I still have issues 1-100 of that. [img]smile.gif[/img]
